Coyote spotted near Canatara Park during daytime hours

Sarnia police are issuing some safety reminders after a coyote was spotted in the city during daytime hours.

The service was recently contacted about a coyote walking through a residential neigbourhood east of Canatara Park.

Cst. John Sottosanti said even though the canines are not normally as active during the day, they are still out and about.

Sottosanti said the public is asked not to approach these animals. He said coyotes are not known to approach humans but are rather very timid and tend to run away.

Residents are encouraged not to leave out food and garbage that may attract coyotes and to also take care of small pets that may be left outside uncared for.

Sottosanti said the notice is just to remind people regarding their surroundings and how nature is so integrated with the City of Sarnia. He said there is no need to contact police when sighting a coyote unless it's believed the animal is ill (for example rabies).
