Police identify man killed in canoeing incident

Lambton OPP has identified the man who died earlier this week after a canoe capsized in Lake Huron.

Police have identified the victim as 36-year-old Michael Shawnoo of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation.

First responders were called about a marine incident at around 11 a.m. Wednesday near Ipperwash beach.

Provincial police along with members of the Kettle and Stony Point Fire Department, Lambton Shores Fire and Emergency Services, the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards, Lambton Emergency Medical Services, and members of the community rushed to help two people seen in the water.

They were pulled from the water and taken to hospital. OPP said the second person in the boat, who was in stable condition, has since been released.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Shawnoo's family to cover living expenses. The fundraiser said he left behind a fiancée and four children.

As of Friday, the fundraiser raised over $17,000, surpassing its $10,000 goal.
