Christina St. McDonald's undergoes major renovations

When the McDonald's restaurant on Christina Street in Sarnia reopens in June, it will have a completely different look inside and out.

The restaurant closed for renovations on April 4 and will be closed for approximately eight weeks.

The Christina Street location is the oldest restaurant owned by Peter and Colleen Buckley. It was built in 1976 and although it has undergone some renovations since then, Peter said this is the first major project since 2006.

He said renovations will include a complete remodel of the interior and exterior, such as a new parking lot, landscaping, and a new front sign.

"The reasons to do a renovation like this is first and foremost to remain contemporary for our guests, but also to continue to enhance the comfort levels for our crew, our management, and our guests as well," he said.

Peter said the interior will also include a pick-up area for McDelivery and other delivery service providers such as Uber Eats and Skip the Dishes.

"They're working with us to satisfy our guests so this will make their pick-up and delivery much easier."

The project is expected to cost "well over" $1 million.

"We've been working towards this project for approximately the past six years. It has been delayed for a variety of reasons, the most recent of which is of course COVID-19," said Peter. "This was slated to be done in 2019 and now with the restrictions being removed, we are back in action and looking forward to providing a brand new store."

While the Christina street location is closed, customers have another option in the nearby area.

The Buckey's latest McDonald’s location in Sarnia opened in February, in the area of Confederation Street and Vanier Road. Peter said it has been doing well and has been "warmly welcomed" by the community.
