A return to in-person Canada Day celebrations planned in Sarnia

Sarnia's Canada Day Committee is planning a return to in-person events this July 1st.

Community Services Coordinator Rachel Veilleux said activities are being organized for both Canatara Park and Centennial Park.

"The structure of the day's events will remain mostly unchanged, beginning with the annual parade at 11:30 a.m., followed by daytime activities and entertainment at Canatara Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. " said Veilleux. "There will be a small break before the community is welcomed to meet back up at Centennial Park for more food and entertainment, capped off by the fireworks show at 10 p.m."

Veilleux said they're really looking forward to it.

"This year and the last couple of years have certainly been unique, because each year we tried to adapt to the circumstances given the pandemic, and it felt generally successful in what we've been able to host for the community, but we're extremely excited to bring back the in-person event. We know that it's quite a favourite within the community and we're excited to bring back some old favourites and certainly some new features as well."

Veilleux said they've booked the same pyrotechnics company.

"We are very proud of the show that they put on and I do believe that it will be a little bit larger than it normally is because we've been able to save up for a couple years."

Veilleux said the province's decision to lift certain public health measures factored into the decision to move forward.

"The lifting of capacity limits primarily, but then of course physical distancing as well and masking too. That said, we still recognize everyone wants to keep safe and we want to support everyone with their own safety and choice and we're just excited to be able to offer something happy for the community."

Veilleux said more information on the activities and how to participate will be released on the City of Sarnia website later this month.

Members of the Optimist Club of Bright's Grove announced plans last month to host Canada Day celebrations.
