UPDATE: Phase one of Plank Road project to start soon

Phase one of the Plank Road construction project will begin in early April.

The first phase of the project was expected to take place in 2021 but was pushed back due to supply issues.

The City of Sarnia's Construction Manager Robert Williams said the project's first phase will indeed go ahead this spring and is expected to be completed by the end of June.

"We started installing water main last year on Gladwish Drive, which runs between McGregor and Plank Road. That piece of water main will provide a loop to McGregor when we get to shut the Plank Road water main down," he said. "The first section of our Plank Road project includes new water main from Indian Road to McGregor and then all new road associated with it as well."

*In an update provided to Sarnia News, Williams said water main work on Gladwish Drive to feed the system to McGregor Side Road began on April 4. Work that would impact traffic on Plank Road between Indian Road and McGregor Side Road will likely begin at the end of May. Williams said, for the most part, the city will try to limit traffic interruptions by having remote flaggers to direct traffic.

Williams said a tender will soon be issued for the second phase of the Plank Road project, which involves a one kilometre stretch from McGregor Side Road towards Gladwish Drive. He said the city would be looking for a July start with an October finish for the second phase of the project.

Birnam Excavating Ltd., out of Arkona, was hired as the contractor for phase one.

Williams said the total cost of the first phase is about $3.3 million.

During part of the construction period, Plank Road between Indian Road and McGregor Side Road will be temporarily closed to through traffic. Williams said detour routes will be posted and the city will specify dates for the closure in the near future.
