Sarnia Fire and Rescue battled two fires within a few hours overnight.
At around 9 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to an apartment in the 100 block of Alice Street.
Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said a pot was left on the stove and firefighters arrived to find the unit filled with smoke.
"Just smoke damage," said Otis. "Luckily firefighters got there quick enough to prevent it from getting worse."
At around 2 a.m. Thursday, crews were called to a home in the 100 block of Euphemia Street. Firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke and flames coming from the triplex.
Otis said one occupant was taken to Bluewater Health for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. He said damage is estimated at about $150,000.
"Preliminary reports show that it was candles that caused the fire at Euphemia," said Otis. "One of our fire investigators attended the scene and we've also notified the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office. Just a friendly reminder from Sarnia Fire Rescue to never leave candles or cooking unattended, they are two of the leading causes of fires. Also, having working smoke alarms and a home escape plan are essential to the safety of you and your family."
It has been a busy week for the city fire service. Firefighters have responded to five structure fires since Tuesday, March 15.
