UPDATE: Successful implosion at LGS site (VIDEO)

Saturday morning's planned implosion of the former Lambton Generating Station was a success.

Ontario Power Generation spokesman Neal Kelly said in an email Saturday morning that stacks and boilers were on the ground and that all went as planned.

The long-awaited implosion brought down the remaining structures at the site near Courtright. Contractor Delsan-AIM Environmental Services took care of the demolition.

Previously, Kelly had said sirens and air horns may be heard by nearby residents immediately before, and shortly after the implosion.

Closures were planned at the following intersections, from 6:30 a.m. until 9 a.m., to accommodate the work:

• Bickford Line and St. Clair Parkway • Oil Springs Line and St. Clair Parkway • Oil Springs Line and Highway 40 • St. Clair Parkway and Courtright Line • Greenfield Line and Oil Springs Line • Greenfield Line and Courtright Line

The St. Clair River was also restricted from any water traffic entering the exclusion zone.

Lambton Generating Station was shut down after 44 years of operation in 2013 when the province decided to phase out coal power generation.
