Sarnia, Point Edward among Ontario municipalities receiving gas tax boost

Municipalities across Ontario, including Sarnia and Point Edward, are getting some additional funding from this year's provincial Gas Tax program.

The total pot of $375.6 million includes an additional $120.4 million to make up for reduced gas sales in 2021.

The City of Sarnia will receive $1,152,561, or roughly 0.3 per cent of the total funding. The Village of Point Edward will receive $20,597 from the program.

The province is allocating the funding to 107 municipalities that deliver public transit.

Funding for the Gas Tax program is determined by the number of litres of gasoline sold in the province during the previous year. Municipalities that support public transit services in their community receive two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenue. The funding can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.
