Pandemic delays completion of Lambton County Shared Services

Completion of the Lambton County Shared Services site at the former Bayside Mall location has been delayed.

A construction update from Facilities General Manager Larry Palarchio was received during the county's committee p.m. meeting Wednesday.

Palarchio said they've spent about $3.1 million so far.

"Our budget, as far as our costs, are on target," said Palarchio. "In 2020, our budget was $700,000 and the 2021 budget is $3.7 million. We are anticipating to be a little bit below budget in 2021, but we have some more budgetary items to bill for 2022."

Palarchio said there have been some challenges related to COVID-19.

"We're more than likely experiencing a bit of a delay as a result of the COVID pandemic. The latest update has been about three or four months."

Palarchio said unforeseen abatement issues, material delivery issues and contractor staffing levels are contributing factors.

It's now hoped construction will be complete by the end of April, 2022.

Palarchio said demolition of the mall is complete.

Seasons Retirement Communities had the site cleared to make way for development of two new residential retirement towers and additional assisted living accommodations.

Palarchio also said negotiations have concluded for the new bus terminal, but the county is waiting for the final details of the space.
