COVID deaths and outbreaks increase

The local COVID-19 death toll has climbed to 99.

Lambton Public Health has reported three more deaths linked to the virus Tuesday.

The latest was a man in his 70s reported by Bluewater Health on Monday. A local individual in their 80s died at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, and another in their 60s died at London Health Sciences Centre.

In its daily update, the health unit reported 85 more lab confirmed infections and 239 resolved cases, lowering the active case count by 157 to 712.

Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said a few months ago 85 cases would have been a very large number, but now it's a very normal number.

"The thinking is that with Omicron, for every case we know about, both because of the testing changes and because of how transmissible it is, there are probably four to six cases that you don't know about," said Dr. Ranade.

Since March 2020, there have been 7,953 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Sarnia-Lambton, of which 7,142 have been deemed resolved.

There are 16 institutional and workplace outbreaks, up one from Monday. The latest was declared on Monday at Country Manor Estates Retirement Home in Lambton Shores.

Bluewater Health is also reporting another death, the 83rd at the hospital since the start of the pandemic. There are 59 COVID-positive patients at the Sarnia hospital, up three from Monday. The hospital said 10 of the positive patients are in intensive care.
