New video series highlights agriculture sector in SL

Sarnia-Lambton farmers, producers, and those in the agribusiness are being showcased in a new video series.

Local Helping Local, an initiative involving Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) and the Lambton Federation of Agriculture, features a series of short videos that cover agriculture business topics.

SLEP Economic Development Officer Shauna Carr said they really concentrated on what was of benefit to the local agriculture sector, with the expertise that's already here.

"So, those videos are succession planning, they're around innovation in agriculture, they're around value added agriculture, they're around career pathways, planning for the agriculture sector, environmental stewardship, and emerging partnerships."

Carr said it's all to show local folks how to make it in the sector in Lambton county. She said the videos are intended for those in agribusiness.

"So that they can learn from their peers," said Carr. "But it's also good information for the general public who maybe aren't as strong in the agriculture sector and want to just know what's happening in their own community."

Carr said it's important for those who are looking to expand and innovate, to share ideas and work together. She said agriculture is one of the top three economic drivers for Lambton county.

"So it's very important that it not only survives, but it thrives and -- pardon the pun -- continues to grow. And we have great numbers of expertise in all of these different areas."

Carr added that folks want to know where their food is coming from, especially since the pandemic hit

"Where the agriculture sector is going and how they can envelop that into their own lives, and understand where the supply chain is for the food that they're eating, the products they're drinking and where they can get them."

The Local Helping Local project also involves webinar series on January 18 and 19 and an opportunity for those in the sector to share what barriers they might be facing. The project is funded in part by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
