Sarnia council briefs

A representative from Enbridge's Aviation Division has been appointed to Sarnia's airport action working group.

An expert in the field was sought after council extended its lease with Scottsdale Aviation.

Senior aircraft maintenance engineer Ryan Mawer has been recommended to the post by the company and will be invited to the next meeting in January.

Enbridge Aviation employs five people at the airfield and operates a helicopter for pipeline inspection.

A $375,000 tender for supply and delivery of a new runway sweeper was also accepted and staff were given pre-approval to get some estimates to build a new hangar.

Parking on Lakeshore Road, between Murphy Road and Telfer Road, will now be restricted.

Sarnia council has passed a bylaw that will see signs erected prohibiting on-street parking on both sides of the road in that stretch.

------------------------------------------------------

The Victoria Street parking lot pilot has been extended for another year.

The pilot was initially approved to support downtown merchants.

The use of about 55 free daily parking spaces will continue until the end of 2022.

-----------------------------------------------------

Council has direct staff to move forward with public consultation for off-leash dog beach and off-leash dog park locations in January.

Staff have been directed to return to council with final recommendations in the first quarter of 2022.

------------------------------------------

An amended lease agreement with the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club has been accepted.

The $1.50 ticket surcharge will increase to $2 next year and a new reserve account will be created for the ticket surcharge so the use of the funds is more transparent.

-----------------------------------------------

Free menstrual products will continue to be offered in City of Sarnia facilities on a permanent basis.

The total cost of feminine hygiene products offered so far this year has been approximately $665.

The annual estimated cost is $1,000.

----------------------------------------------------

Sarnia council will send a letter to upper tiers of government requesting improvements to Ontario's justice system.

Councillor Bill Dennis submitted a motion calling for change to the current state of what he calls "catch and release" justice.

He said police services across the province are exhausting precious time and resources by having to manage the repeated arrests of the same offenders.

Dennis said it impacts officer morale, and law abiding citizens both emotionally and financially.

The request will also be referred to the Sarnia Police Services Board and the AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario).

---------------------------------------------------

Council has extended the current temporary relief measures for patios on private and public property until the end of next year.
