Former Sarnia man now accused of sexually assaulting two teens

A former Sarnia resident accused of sexually assaulting a teenager is facing new charges stemming from his time as a youth basketball coach in Calgary.

Calgary police originally charged 39-year-old Sean Maheu in January with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation.

Police said a male victim alleged he had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by his coach after joining the Genesis Basketball League during the summer of 2016 when he was 14.

On Thursday, the service announced additional charges against Maheu after another victim was identified.

In January, police began investigating a complaint from a male victim who alleged that starting in 2018, when he was 16, he had been sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by a man employed as his youth worker in a program with Hull Services.  On November 10, Maheu was charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation .

In a media release, Staff Sgt. Michelle Doyle, with the sexual assault unit, said the service acknowledges that it can be very confusing for a young person experiencing exploitation by someone in a position of trust.

“In this instance, the victim reported assaults that began in 2018 and we want to ensure people are aware that there is no time limit for victims to report a sexual assault in Canada.”

Maheu is set to appear in Calgary court December 16.
