Enbridge aims to meet increased local demand with pipeline expansion project

Enbridge Gas is announcing the completion of a pipeline expansion project to better service companies in Sarnia's Chemical Valley.

The reinforcement of a 1.2km, 20 diameter section of natural gas pipeline will help meet increased demand, specifically when it comes to NOVA Chemicals' two growth projects.

NOVA is working on expanding its Corunna cracker, and constructing a new polyethylene plant

Enbridge Director of Southwest Region Operations Steven Jelich said the system is now capable of carrying 73.6 terajoules of product per day from the Dow Valve site to the Bluewater Interconnect Transmission Station in St. Clair Township.

"The Sarnia industrial line is a key piece of infrastructure in servicing the residential, commercial and industrial markets," said Jelich. "Our commitment is to grow with the communities in which we work, play and serve in. So this is an example of where municipalities, First Nations, Metis and other key stakeholders have worked together."

Jelich said the initial estimated cost of the pipeline reinforcement project was around $40 million.

Enbridge also recently received Lambton County Council's support for its $250 million Dawn Corunna Project. That includes the decommissioning of seven of 11 natural gas compressors in Corunna.

The second component of the project is the construction of a roughly 19 kilometer long natural gas pipeline between the Corunna station and the Dawn Operation Centre.
