Work continues to progress on the future home of NOVA Chemicals' polyethylene manufacturing facility on Rokeby Line.
Construction of the $2.5 billion plant is over 80 per cent completed, and the facility is on track for a late 2022 start up.
Vice President of Manufacturing East Rob Thompson said they partnered with a company called GreenMantra to sustainably pave a parking lot and two pathways.
"The technology develops a wax additive that gets added to the asphalt," said Thompson. "It increases the properties of the asphalt to make it more durable for Canadian winters and blends in recycled polyethylene to add to the properties of the asphalt."
Thompson said the paving incorporates the equivalent of 700,000 plastic bags in post-consumer recycled plastic materials.
He said over 2,000 skilled tradespeople are on site each day.
Over 150 permanent fulltime jobs will be created, and many workers have already been hired and are undergoing training.
NOVA is also working to expand its nearby Corunna cracker.
The new polyethylene plant will have the capacity to produce about one billion pounds a year with the adjacent cracker expansion providing ethylene feedstock for the new plant. Cracker capacity will be expanded by more than 50 per cent.
