United Way campaign surpasses 50 per cent mark

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign is halfway there.

Executive Director Dave Brown said the annual fundraising effort is up $20,000 over last week, for a total of $890,000 or 51 per cent of their goal.

He said a number of companies are launching their campaigns, with five weeks left to go.

"A lot of the federal government employees have just kicked off their campaigns, as have too Lambton College and Bluewater Health is planning on kicking off their campaign today," said Brown.

The organization is hoping to raise $1.75 million this year to help fund 20 local agencies providing 40 programs and services.

"If we were to compare apples to apples, we're still lagging about $30,000 to $35,000 behind last year," said Brown. "So we still have five more weeks to go in the campaign and we know that we've got a lot of big campaigns that are in the early stages, so we're hopeful that those people who gave last year will continue to give again this year."

He said so far, over 1,600 donors have contributed to this year's campaign.
