COVID death toll in Sarnia-Lambton reaches 73

The local death toll from COVID-19 has increased by two.

In its daily update Friday, Lambton Public Health reported that since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, there have been 73 related deaths. The health unit said one individual was in their 60s, the other in their 90s, and both died in hospital. Further details, including gender and vaccination status, were not disclosed.

The health unit said as health custodians, they're unable to divulge the individual status of vaccination.

Lambton Public Health reported nine new infections Friday, up to 4,264, and three more resolved cases for a total of 4,144, increasing the active case count by four to 47.

There are four active outbreaks, unchanged from Thursday.

Bluewater Health has seven COVID-positive patients in hospital, two of them are in the intensive care unit (ICU). None of the patients are on a ventilator.

Communications Chief Julia Oosterman said the hospital is seeing more serious illness in unvaccinated patients.
