Warwick mayor excited for new municipal office

Warwick Council is hoping to move in to its new chambers by early next spring.

Plans to build a new municipal office in Watford, on the east side of Nauvoo Road from Front Street to Huron Street, were announced in late 2019.

Mayor Jackie Rombouts said council is excited to see the project completed.

"It's gone up beside Libro in the downtown.  It was part of an initiative that council decided to be the anchor tenant for that project because it needed to happen," she said. "It's taking probably like the worst part of town and turning it into one of the best and the newest and brightest, and it just has totally revitalized our downtown."

The Watford Investment Group purchased then demolished several buildings on the roadway a few years ago.  Construction of the new buildings is ongoing.

"We're hoping for March-April for the opening of that building -- Libro is open now.  And I know there are buildings in between that the developers are looking for any interested businesses to lease out the space to."

Rombouts said the site is going to bring council back to the heart of the community.

"Our current situation, we don't have a council chambers, so we're kind of a roaming council or on Zoom right now, so we're very excited to be back in together as a community."

Warwick Council is currently holding its meetings on Zoom.  Rombouts said the new council chamber will still allow for councillors to interact virtually.

Last month, township officials gathered for a ceremonial groundbreaking of the East Lambton Community Complex, an $11.5 million project.
