Help needed to set up Sarnia's Celebration of Lights displays

It's a sure sign that the holiday season is just around the corner.

Sarnia's Celebration of Lights displays are being set up at Centennial Park over the next couple of weekends.

The volunteer committee is asking those with trucks and trailers to help them take the displays out of storage on November 6 at 9 a.m. Those interested are asked to meet at Sandrin Services on Exmouth Street.

Chairman of the Board Dean Holtz said the event wouldn't be possible without community assistance.

"We're all volunteers that put on this event, so we rely on the good people in the Sarnia area to come together," said Holtz. "It really is a collection of hundreds of people, between the people that come out in person and help with their time and then the people who also donate gifts of money to help sponsor everything."

Holtz said any monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.

"Our funds are low this year and we understand it's been a tough year for some businesses, but for some it's been really good. So we're hoping some of them might consider stepping up a bit and helping out. We aren't putting on the opening ceremonies this year because there were too many restrictions. We couldn't do the horse trolley rides, the face painting or having Santa sit with the kids. We thought rather than just do a partial event, we'd wait until next year when we can do the whole thing with excellence and maybe even do it bigger and better."

The main community set up day is scheduled for November 13, starting at 9 a.m.

Holtz is hoping to get 40 to 50 people to come out and volunteer. They can meet at the Agora stage at Centennial Park.

Those interested in helping out on either day are asked to fill out the form at www.celebrationoflights.com or message them on Facebook.

The displays will be lit up sometime in late November or early December.
