Kettle Point educational assistant cuts her locks for cancer fundraiser

Hillside School at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation was buzzing with excitement over the noon hour Friday.

Senior Kindergarten Educational Assistant Kim George had her thick, long, curly locks cut off -- making good on a promise she made if the school reached $3,000 in pledges for the Terry Fox Foundation.

"We were trying to figure out how to get the community together and get the kids excited to raise some money and try to teach them how to go out and do something for the greater good," said George. "Almost everybody knows somebody that has either passed away, or is surviving, or living with cancer right now."

The school had never raised over $800 dollars, so George decided it was time to up the ante.

"I told the Grade 3 class [my plan] first. They were the first class that I went to to talk about Terry Fox. I had set the goal at $2,500 and they said no, we can do $3,000, and the kids went crazy! One child raised over $300."

George said it didn't take long for news to spread through the community.

"We had parents going to their work and saying 'you need to sponsor my kid, because we have somebody that wants to shave their head' and it was just really neat how everybody was supportive and just going all out and making sure that we were going to succeed and get that $3,000."

George said she wanted to honour her husband's mother, who passed away of cancer, and a close family friend, who just fought stage 4 cancer.

"I wanted to do something that was able to help with recognizing that I do care and that we're all in it together. She just got cleared a few weeks ago of cancer, so it's something to celebrate."

Understandably, George admitted to being nervous.

"Very much so, but I'm also so proud of the kids that they actually did it. I love this community and I love being a part of this community and it's worth all of it."

George's haircut was streamed live on the Hillside School Facebook page.
