City Hall to recognize Dress Purple Day

Sarnia City Hall will be lit purple Wednesday night in support of a provincial campaign, Dress Purple Day.

The campaign raises awareness of the role communities and individuals have in supporting vulnerable youth and families.

As stated by the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies (OACAS), the pandemic has created additional issues for families, which is why this year's campaign is more important than ever.

The month of October had previously been recognized as "Child Abuse Prevention Month". However, due to an unwarranted increase in surveillance on marginalized families, the campaign has changed.

"Instead, the Dress Purple Day campaign is about supporting Ontarians facing challenges and ensuring children, youth, and families have access to the supports, information, and resources they need," read a statement from OACAS CEO Nicole Bonnie.

"We are using Dress Purple Day to build stronger partnerships with our members and cross-sector providers to focus on strengthening families through enhanced community-based prevention and early intervention."
