You can dust off your hockey or figure skates for the season if you haven't already.
Free public skating programs started this week at Progressive Auto Sales Arena and continue until December, with the hope that health regulations allow them to continue in the new year from January to March.
Community Service General Manager Stacey Forfar said there's a few to choose from.
"Children five years or younger, with their parents, can go Monday through Thursdays in the mornings from 11 to 12 o'clock," said Forfar. "There's adult skates, 18 plus is usually the benchmark for that, Monday through Thursdays again, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 2 p.m."
Forfar said open skates are also being offered.
"Which is all ages, anybody can come, Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and then there's family skates, so children and parents of all ages, on Sunday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m."
Similar to last year, pre-registration is required and participation capacity is limited for each session.
"It's a little bit higher than it was last year, which is great. It's up to 40 participants per session. Registration opens up on the Friday before the week."
Forfar advises participants to get ready in the parking lot.
"The buildings will be unlocked about 20 minutes prior to the program start, and then locked again about 5 minutes in. So, folks are encouraged to show up in your skates ready to go."
All participants must be pre-screened for COVID-19 symptoms, those over 18-years-old must show proof of full vaccination and masks are mandatory in the building and dressing rooms, but not required on the ice. Spectators are not permitted during the programs.
