Public health survey examines vaccine preference, hesitancy

The local health unit is looking to gauge where parents stand on having their children vaccinated against COVID-19 and how the rollout should take place.

Lambton Public Health (LPH) is conducting two community surveys, one of which is specific to vaccine clinics for families and children.

LPH Epidemiologist Siobhan Churchill said a brief online survey will ask parents and guardians of children between the ages of five and 11 where they prefer vaccinations to take place.

"We're asking whether parents have a preference for a couple of different options for vaccine clinics, including a family-friendly community clinic, clinics for schools -- either during or after school hours, at the child's primary care provider, or at pharmacies," she said. "We expect to offer multiple options but the survey will help us tailor those."

The survey also looks to identify how many parents will vaccinate their children against the virus.

"Among those who may be unsure or unlikely to vaccinate, we want to know what their concerns are," said Churchill.

Although there is no specified date as to when children five and up will become eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, Churchill said it's expected that the age group will become eligible this fall.

"We're getting a head start on planning," she said.

The brief survey generated over 200 responses in the first 24 hours that it launched. The survey will close on October 18.

Meantime, Ipsos Public Affairs is currently conducting a telephone survey on behalf of LPH that's expected to wrap up in the next week or so.

This survey focuses on how residents are coping during the latest wave in terms of their wellbeing, whether they support the vaccine certificate system, and opinions about LPH.

"We're really excited to get those results soon and we'll be sharing that in a report that will be made public," said Churchill.

She also said it could be a month or so until a report is ready to be released.
