LTC homes to see staffing increases with provincial funding boost

Eight long term care facilities in Sarnia-Lambton will see staffing increases, thanks to a funding boost from the Ontario government.

Just over $3.4 million is being allocated locally as part of $270 million in additional money, announced Wednesday.

Long Term Care Minister Rod Phillips said this year's increase for a typical 160-bed home means $1.2 million more in funding for new front line staff over the next year.

"By 2024, that same 160-bed home will receive an additional $3.2 million more than they receive now for PSWs and nurses," said Phillips. "That means that a typical 160-bed home will have an additional six registered nurses, an additional 12 registered practical nurses, and an additional 25 personal support workers."

A province-wide investment of $4.9 billion, over four years, will boost direct resident care to an average of four hours daily by increasing care staff by more than 27,000 people.

Right now, residents receive an average of two hours and 45 minutes of direct care each day.

Phillips says by 2023-24, Ontario will be investing $1.82 billion in additional base funding for staffing each and every year.
