Ontario hires more health and safety inspectors

Ontario's team of health and safety inspectors is now the largest in provincial history, with 507 members.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton -- who serves as Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development -- said they made a promise in March 2020 to keep workers safe.

Since then, the provincial government has published over 200 sector specific guidelines, introduced paid sick days, doubled the phone lines at the health and safety contact centre and now more health and safety inspectors will be visiting workplaces in construction, industrial and health care settings.

"I'm proud to celebrate the graduation of more than 100 new health and safety inspectors who are now on the ground visiting workplaces in every community across Ontario," said McNaughton.

McNaughton said since March 2020, over 65,000 workplace inspections have been conducted.

The province also launched an interactive tool to help businesses create and update COVID-19 safety protocols. The Workplace Safety Plan Builder was developed specifically for small businesses.
