YMCA Peace Medal nominations open

The YMCA is accepting nominations for this year's Peace Medal.

Peace week committee chair and regional manager of newcomer youth, Marcela Nieto, said individuals or groups must demonstrate a commitment to the values of peace, through their local, national or global community and without any special resources, status, wealth or position.

"As part of the YMCA Peace Week, which is from November 13 to the 20, YMCAs across Canada present peace week medals to individuals or groups in the community," said Nieto.

Nieto said nominations with, or without, formal connections to the Y will be accepted.

"People have until the end of this month to have the nominations in and select whoever they think is a great peacemaker in the community."

Since 1987, more than 1,900 individuals and groups have been recognized for their peacebuilding work.

Recipients receive the medal, a certificate and a chance to share their stories to bring awareness to their work.

Two Sarnia residents were recipients of the medal in 2020, Camilla McGill and Lindsay Kirkland.

Nominations are open until September 29.
