Legionnaires host St. Thomas Saturday in GOJHL home opener

The Sarnia Legionnaires host the St. Thomas Stars on Saturday in their first GOJHL regular season hockey game in over a year.

The 2020-21 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Head Coach Derek Di Muzio said it's exciting to get back at it.

"We're really excited to be able to play in front of our fans and feed off their energy," said Di Muzio. "It's been quite a challenge, obviously, with not having a season last year. We were just focusing on development, but now we're just excited to get back."

Di Muzio is happy with how things have gone during the preseason and said they continue to work on their systems. He expects the Legionnaires to be a fast team, that's strong on the forecheck and hard to play against.

Di Muzio said their goaltending will be a strength with the return of veteran Nolan DeKoning.

"He's a vet, he's looked very sharp in practice, and he's pushing our other players to be better because he competes hard and stops pucks," he said. "Outside of that, we've got quite a balanced attack and we'll be quick upfront."

Saturday's contest gets underway at 7 p.m. at Sarnia Arena.
