Hospital reports COVID death, outbreak declared at Walpole Island child centre

Sarnia's hospital is reporting its first COVID-related death in four weeks.

Bluewater Health Communications Chief Julia Oosterman said the 77-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital from his home.  It was the site's 55th COVID-related death of the pandemic.

There are currently no COVID-positive patients in hospital.

For a second time this week, Lambton Public Health has announced an outbreak of COVID-19.

On Thursday, the health unit reported fewer than five cases linked to Bkejwanong Children's Centre at Walpole Island First Nation.  The province is still reporting one active case at the centre.

A child care setting outbreak is declared when two or more lab-confirmed cases are reported in children, staff or other visitors in a setting with an epidemiological link within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the child care facility.

In a social media post Thursday, Walpole Island First Nation Council was reporting 18 active COVID cases and a total of 197 confirmed cases.

Lambton Public Health reported the Sarnia-Lambton community's first COVID outbreak in just over two months Wednesday, involving two students at Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School.

The health unit also reported 12 new cases and six more resolved cases Thursday morning, bringing active cases to 59.

There have been a total of 3,796 confirmed cases, 3,668 resolved and 69 COVID-related deaths over the course of the pandemic.
