Point Edward prepares to remove signs on village boulevards

The Village of Point Edward is once again cracking down on signs posted on boulevards.

After noticing an increase in signs, the village issued a reminder to residents over social media to not post them on boulevards under section 4.22 of Point Edward's zoning bylaw.

CAO Jim Burns said the village does not allow this for safety and aesthetics reasons.

"If there's too many signs on the boulevards, people are paying attention to the signs rather than what they're supposed to be paying attention to driving on the road. It could potentially be a danger and a hazard," he said.

Burns said with the upcoming federal election, it's anticipated that more signs will continue to pop up on boulevards.

Signs posted in unauthorized areas are typically removed on a regular basis but the village opted to keep some "slow down" signs up a little longer to address speeding concerns.

"They've been up now for probably about six weeks or so. We let them be there because they had a message that was quite important but they've been there, we feel, long enough and we want to get back to our practice," said Burns.

Signs that remain on village boulevards after September 10 will be removed and taken to the Public Works garage. Burns said residents will have an opportunity to pick up their signs but if they are not collected, the signs will be disposed of.

"Quite often it'll be real estate signs and that type of thing. We usually will contact people and let them know why they've been removed and that we have them, and they're welcome to come get them and use in other spots," he said. "[With] election signs, it's the same thing."

Residents are able to post signs on their private property so long as they comply with applicable bylaws.
