Fireworks, Barn Dance return to Petrolia

A couple of free summer-time events in Petrolia will be held over the Labour Day long weekend.

The rescheduled Canada Day fireworks are set to light up the night sky at Greenwood Park on Friday, September 3, at 9 p.m.

Director of Facilities and Community Services Dave Menzies said residents are encouraged to take lawn chairs and blankets to watch the fireworks.

Canada Day fireworks were postponed in July until a larger number of people could gather outdoors. Under Stage 3 of the province's Roadmap to Reopen, outdoor events are open to up to 5,000 spectators or 75 per cent capacity.

The town has partnered with Hull Bus Lines to provided shuttles back and forth from the fireworks. Pick-up and drop-off locations can be found on the town's Facebook page.

In the event of rain, fireworks will instead be held on Sunday, September 5.

Meantime, country music fans can also attend the Petrolia barn dance on Saturday, September 4 at 5:30 p.m.

"The barn dance is probably one of our most popular events in Petrolia during the summer," said Menzies. "Scott Manery [and the Barnburners] do a great job entertaining. It's one of the highlights of the summer concert series."

The barn dance will take place at the Petrolia Farmers' Market pavilion with COVID-19 restrictions in place.

Menzies said there will be security at the dance to keep track of how many people are going in and out due to capacity limits. The event will be first come, first serve.

"We're looking for a fun-filled Saturday night dance," said Menzies.

Aside from the entertainment, attendees can enjoy the beer garden as well as some food provided by the Lambton Central Petrolia Optimist Club and the Petrolia Lions Club.

COVID-19 guidelines are posted to the town's website.
