Imperial Theatre to require proof of COVID-19 vaccinations

Sarnia's Imperial Theatre is the latest venue that will require proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

The announcement was made on Tuesday via an open letter to patrons.

Beginning on September 9, theatre staff, volunteers, performers, audience members and anyone else entering the venue will be required to show proof that they've received two COVID-19 shots.

Executive Director Brian Austin said the goal is to ensure the safety of the community, but admits the policy is getting mixed reactions.

"The reactions have been kind of hot and cold on both sides," said Austin. "The people who don't want to take the vaccination have kind of raised their concerns, but we've had a lot of support and a lot of people thanking us for taking this step in protecting the audiences, performers, volunteers and staff."

Austin said the policy falls in line with a lot of other institutions across Ontario.

"I just saw Budweiser Gardens put out their statement," he said. "I know Mirvish in Toronto, which is a big theatre company, has a similar statement, and the OHL. They're all coming on board to make sure we can gather safely again."

The theatre is working with the province and local health officials to re-open the doors in mid-October. Shows will be announced at a later date.

Other public health measures and restrictions will continue to be enforced.

Capacity is currently capped at 50 per cent under Ontario guidelines, but Austin said they'll likely start slowly by limiting capacity to one third.
