St. Clair fire trucks get important message across

The St. Clair Township Fire Department is getting creative with how they raise awareness of fire prevention.

A fire truck with messaging on it was recently unveiled and more will soon be seen within the community.

Deputy Fire Chief Andrew McMillan said this has been done in other regions and has been in the works for a few months.

"Fires have been on the rise across Ontario. We have found with COVID, interaction with the public has been difficult," he said. "So we've been looking at creative ways to get fire safety messaging out to the public."

McMillan said in St. Clair Township, the number of fires has been "status quo" in comparison with previous years. However, the number one cause of residential fires is linked to cooking.

"It's important that we remind the public, if they're cooking, stay in the kitchen," said McMillan. "Now, we pretty much have a travelling fire safety billboard."

Another message posted at the side of a fire truck read "Protect What Matters Most" and focused on the importance of smoke alarms.

"In the event of a fire you have less than three minutes to get out so early detection and warning is crucial," he said.

Each of St. Clair Township's six fire stations will have one truck with fire prevention signage on it within the next six months.

"We partnered with a local graphic designer who makes the signage himself, with his company," said McMillan.

The messaging costs about $600 per truck.
