Volunteers needed for log cabin rebuild

The Seaway Kiwanis Club is looking for some heavy lifters.

Spokesperson Ken Stothers said the group has been rebuilding a log cabin at the Children's Animal Farm at Canatara Park.

"The building started about a week and a half ago and we've got most of the log walls up," said Stothers. "We're working on putting the trusses together and we need a boom operator, and we need one crane for one day to put the trusses in place for us. That's where we need help."

It is hoped that work on the cabin will be completed by the end of September.

"We had a new slab poured, and these logs, this cabin is going to look like an authentic cabin when it's all finished," he said.

The cost of the rebuild and restoration of the original log cabin, a nearly 200-year-old structure, is about $100,000.

Those who are able to help out are asked to contact the Seaway Kiwanis Club.
