Grab & Go pancake breakfast to kickoff Mackinac weekend

The Rotary Club of Sarnia is once again hosting its annual classic pancake breakfast, part of its Mackinac weekend extravaganza.

Unlike previous years, it's a grab-and-go event in partnership with the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club.

Spokesperson Carolyn Leaver-Luciani said orders must be placed by Wednesday, July 21.

"Then on Saturday the 24th, you roll up to the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club at your allotted time and a Rotary Club member will run your meal to your car where then you can take it and go eat wherever you want," said Leaver-Luciani. "You can pick any spot along the waterfront to watch the race, and if you're not up for races you can go home and have breakfast in bed."

About 177 boats are expected to take part in the 97th running of the Bayview Mackinac Boat Race on Saturday.

In previous years, The Rotary Club of Sarnia would serve about 3,000 breakfasts over a four hour period to residents watching the boats under the Blue Water Bridge.

"Yes, it's a little bit different this year," said Leaver-Luciani. "We didn't know what we were going to be able to do as far as serving and whatever with COVID, so we paired up with the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club and they're going to cook the delicious pancakes and sausages this year."

Money raised from the event will benefit local charities including St. Joseph's Hospice and Pathways Health Centre for Children.
