Alleged impaired driver stopped with kids in car

A Wallaceburg woman is facing impaired driving charges after travelling the wrong direction down a one-way street with two children in the vehicle.

Sarnia police said the woman attended a business on Vidal Street at around 10 a.m. Sunday. An employee contacted police after detecting a strong scent of alcohol on the accused, and noticing that the woman was showing signs of impairment.

Officers responded to the area, located the vehicle travelling the wrong way down a one-way street, and conducted a traffic stop. Police said after several attempts, the driver finally provided a suitable breath sample into a roadside device, resulting in a fail. The woman was arrested and the children in the vehicle were safely turned over to a family friend.

The accused was transported back to police headquarters for an intoxilyzer test, and after several failed attempts, was charged with impaired operation and fail or refuse to comply with a demand made by a peace officer.

The 35-year-old woman was released and has a court appearance set for September 14.
