OPP encourage boater sobriety, preparedness

Lambton OPP will have two marine units patrolling local waterways for the first weekend of July.

Cst. Jamie Bydeley said officers will conduct vessel checks and ensure boater sobriety.

"Lambton OPP marine units are going to encourage boaters to make sure they are doing a proper check of their vessel and equipment prior to departure," said Bydeley. "Make sure you have all of your safety equipment, life jackets, and flares, and whatnot on board."

In general, Bydeley said boat operators are following the rules when it comes to water safety.

"I think a lot of times, the boat is out on the water for the first time for the year since restrictions have been lifted and so maybe not all of the [boater's] equipment is working or on board the vessel," he said. "For the most part, boaters are compliant. We just want to encourage everybody to make sure they have everything in check on their vessel."

Coming off a statutory holiday, the weather this weekend is expected to be nice. Environment Canada's forecast calls for sunny conditions on Saturday and a mix of sun and cloud on Sunday with only a 30 per cent chance of showers.
