Sting sign first-round pick MacDonell

The Sarnia Sting have signed 2021 first round pick Angus MacDonell to an OHL Standard Player Agreement.

The 16-year-old Toronto native was chosen by the Sting 13th overall in the recent league draft.

In a news release, MacDonell said he can't wait to get started with his new team.

"I am extremely honoured to get to be a part of such an amazing organization," said MacDonell. "I cannot wait to get down to Sarnia and meet all of my teammates, the staff and fans. I am excited to get to camp and play with such talented players and learn form all the supporting staff. This is an incredible opportunity; one I plan on making the most of. It is time for me to put in the work this off season so I can help the Sting compete for an OHL championship."

MacDonell had 23 goals and nine assists for 32 points in 27 games played during the 2019-20 season.

He was poised to captain a very strong Toronto Marlboros U16 team, before the 2020-21 campaign was cancelled.

Sting General Manager Dylan Seca welcomed MacDonell with open arms.

"We are so happy to have had the opportunity to select Angus and equally as thrilled now to be able to officially welcome him and his family to our city and our team," said Seca. "Thankfully, there were a few opportunities with proper COVID protocols in place to be able to watch Angus skate and he was someone on our radar from our first viewing of him. He has a high skill level which is equally matched by his character which falls directly in line with our core values as an organization. He will be a player that our fans will love watching play for years to come."

The 2021-22 Ontario Hockey League season will begin October 7, with players arriving in Sarnia for training camp September 4.
