Stepped up police enforcement at Canatara Park

Sarnia police have stepped up enforcement at Canatara Park after public complaints surrounding loud vehicles, dangerous driving, fighting, and public drinking.

Cst. John Sottosanti said officers conducted mobile RIDE programs last Thursday and Friday but didn't find any impaired drivers.

He said they only issued one ticket for stunt driving.

"The only person that was actually issued an offence notice was an individual leaving the park," said Sottosanti. "He was observed accelerating from a stop, causing his tires to spin. He was issued a summons to attend court. He also had his licence suspended for seven days, and his vehicle impounded for seven days."

Police are also focusing their attention on The Cove at the west end of the park.

Sottosanti said several people were warned against public drinking Thursday but some decided to return the following night and were handed tickets.

"We're trying to get a handle on things early and hopefully we can control it," he said. "We realize there are people residing in the area, and people who use it with their families. They shouldn't have to be exposed to unnecessary noises or dangerous driving or fighting or anything of that nature."

Sottosanti said officers will continue to monitor the park and make sure everyone has an enjoyable summer.
