New kayak launch closed for repairs

Heavy waves are blamed for damaging the year-old canoe and kayak launch at Sarnia Bay.

The accessible launch is closed to the public, likely for the next couple of weeks, until repairs can be made.

City General Manager of Community Services Stacey Forfar said some of the steel framing underneath the structure has worn down, which is a concern.

"Fortunately, we've got a great representative from the manufacturer, EZ Dock, who we've been back and forth with," said Forfar. "It's a great little facility down there and it was really heavily used last summer. We just want to make sure that it's going to be well repaired, and that we can get a handle on what's happening with the structure so we can fix it permanently."

Forfar doesn't have a cost estimate for repairs but doesn't expect it to be substantial.

The launch was installed last summer by JS Marine, at an estimated cost of around $75,000.
