UPDATE: Charges laid in Campbell Street collision

A 37-year-old Sarnia man is accused of impaired driving following a crash on Campbell Street that resulted in a snapped hydro pole.

Due to a technical issue, the collision was reported by police Sunday evening, however, the collision occurred Saturday night just after 7 p.m.

Sarnia police said a section of Campbell Street between Shepherd Street and Russell Street South was closed for several hours.

No injuries were reported.

On Tuesday, police released additional information in regards to the investigation. Police said an eastbound vehicle on Campbell Street veered off the road in order to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle that was approaching from the opposite direction. However, police said the other vehicle also left the roadway and hit a hydro pole which caused it to snap and fall over at a 45-degree angle.

The driver involved in the collision allegedly drove away from the scene with a flat tire and significant damage to the vehicle. Police said the other driver followed the suspect to the area of Wellington Street and Brock Street where officers were able to make an arrest.

Police said the accused was arrested and taken to Sarnia police headquarters to be tested by a qualified drug recognition expert. A 37-year-old Sarnia man was charged with impaired operation by drugs and failing to report an accident under the Highway Traffic Act.
