OPP release startling stats ahead of long weekend

Road and boat safety will be top of mind for Lambton OPP this long weekend.

As part of Canada Road Safety Week and Safe Boating Awareness Week, police are reminding motorists and boaters to stay sober behind the wheel.

Over the last ten years, there have been 615 drug and alcohol-related fatal crashes on OPP patrolled roads.

Police said inattentive driving is the lead factor in fatal crashes. Since 2011, there have been 719 inattentive-related fatalities, another 679 were speed-related.

In a news release, Highway Safety Division Commander and OPP Chief Superintendent Rohan Thompson said the number of innocent people killed every year on Canadian roads because of dangerous, careless and other poor driving is staggering.

"It is a tragic reminder that, as a driver, every person travelling with, or around you stands to pay the price if you take risks behind the wheel. So do their families," said Thompson. "How you drive is not just your business, it's everyone's business. Please make every drive a safe drive and ensure everyone buckles up."

Police are also encouraging boaters to educate themselves on boating rules and regulations before they hit the water.

Lambton OPP will be actively engaging boaters to ensure compliance with all mandatory equipment and sobriety requirements.
