Popular War Amps tags key fundraiser for amputee programs

The War Amps' popular key tag service is celebrating 75 years.

Local residents are encouraged to put the tags they get in the mail on their keychains.

Public Awareness Officer James Jordan said each key tag has a confidentially coded number. If you lose your keys, the finder can call the toll-free number on the back or place them in any mailbox in Canada, and The War Amps will return them to you free of charge.

Jordan said The War Amps does not receive any government grants and relies on donations to fund its programs, including the Child Amputee Program (CHAMP).

"The program provides financial assistance for artificial limbs for kids across the country," said Jordan. "It's literally giving a child a leg to stand on, an arm to grab with. This is something that's a big life changing thing for a lot of those kids and their families because prosthetic devices are quite expensive."

Jordan said since the Key Tag Service launched in 1946, they've returned over 1.5 million sets of keys to their owners.

"It was created by WWI and WWII amputee veterans," he said. "They wanted to provide a service to Canadians and at the same time provide funding for their programs for amputees. This service is even more essential in modern day era because the cost of electronic key-fobs are actually quite high."
