Weir wins for first time on PGA Champions Tour
Sarnia’s Mike Weir has recorded his first PGA Tour Champions victory.
The Bright’s Grove lefty won the rain-shortened 36-hole Insperity Invitational at The Woodlands Country Club in Texas.
Weir shot a 4-under par 68 to finish at 10 under, two strokes better than John Daly, Tim Petrovic and David Toms.
Weir earns $337,500 for the win and moves into 8th spot on the champions tour money list with $1,071,519 in winnings. He joined the senior tour after turning 50 in May 2020 and, after contending on a number of occasions, broke through in his 14th event.
Tied with John Daly, Weir clinched the win after Daly carded a double-bogey on the 18th hole after his approach found the water short of the green.
Weir won eight times on the PGA Tour including becoming the first Canadian to win a major tournament, the Masters in 2003. His last win on the PGA Tour was the Fry’s Electronics Open in October of 2007.
