Strong northwesterly winds Friday, water safety statements issued

Strong northwesterly winds have prompted the St. Clair Region and Ausable Bayfield conservation authorities to issue water safety statements.

Environment Canada has a special weather statement in effect for north and east Lambton County.

Sustained winds with gusts up to 80 kilometres an hour are expected Friday afternoon into Friday night as a cold front moves across southern Ontario.

The Ausable authority says the largest wind-driven waves on Lake Huron are expected from Grand Bend north through Bayfield. Flooding and erosion along the shoreline is possible.

Residents are reminded to stay well back from breaking waves, and top-of-bluff areas.

Strong winds are capable of tossing loose objects and could cause some tree branches to break.  Isolated power outages are also possible.
