New church owners to seek city's blessing for renovation plans

The new owners of Sarnia's Central United Church want to begin renovating the historic site by year's end.

London-based Xoana Corporation held a virtual public information session this month to outline its plans that include a mix of residential and commercial uses.

Manager Anthony Mota said it was a very positive meeting for those that took part.

"They were expressing that they were happy to see the plans and what the intention for use is of the property. We received an overwhelming amount of positive support, so we were very happy with the meeting and with the results," he said. "They were happy to see that the original sanctuary was not being destroyed or re-renovated in any way. We are planning on refurbishing any of the areas that are sort of feeling at the age."

Mota said they are going to try to keep it as original as possible.

"We are not removing the organ and any of the stained windows that are showing signs of age. We are going to have a local company there that has done previous work to them before -- we'll be contacting them again and sprucing them up as well."

Mota said the timeline of the project all depends on the City of Sarnia.

"So we're just tying-up the loose ends now after that meeting. We will be submitting hopefully within two to three weeks and then it's however [long] the city takes -- I understand it's a four to five month process with them once we get to that stage, so as soon as that's over with, we're ready to put the shovel in the ground and begin right away."

The sale of the site, located at the corner of Brock Street and George Street, was announced early last year.

Central United was built in 1888 and had additions constructed in 1925 and 1950.

The 20,000 square foot building sits on 1.6 acres of land.
