Sarnia weightlifter eyeing Olympics after setting Canadian, Pan AM record

A Sarnia weightlifter is getting ready for this year's Olympics following a record-setting performance at the pandemic-delayed 2020 Pan Am Games.

Boady Santavy, 23, won a silver medal in the 96 kilogram event Thursday in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He set a Canadian and Pan AM record with a lift of 181 kilograms in the snatch event.

The Sarnia-native's lift of 208 kilograms in the clean and jerk event gave him a total of 389 kilograms. Jhonatan Rivas of Columbia won the gold medal with a total of 393 kilograms.

Santavy is set to compete in his first Olympics this summer in Tokyo.

Boady's grandfather, Bob Santavy, competed in the 1976 Olympics, and his father, Dalas Santavy, competed in the 2005 World Championships and 2008 Pan Am Championships, both in weightlifting.
