Animal neglect charges laid following Sarnia apartment fire

Sarnia police have laid animal neglect charges against a 20-year-old man after firefighters found a dead dog and a malnourished cat at the scene of an apartment fire.

Firefighters and police responded at around 9:45 p.m. Monday to a unit at the corner of London Road and East Street.

While fire crews were cleaning the apartment, they found a dog that was deceased in its steel cage. Police said the bottom of the cage was covered in feces and dog fur and there was no food.

It was determined the dog had died prior to the fire and, neighbours told police that the resident hadn't been seen in a month.

The cat, described as emaciated and lethargic, was delivered to the humane society to be cared for.

The man, who is not being identified by police, is charged with two counts of causing damage or injury to an animal by failing to provide suitable/ adequate food, water, care, or shelter. He was released pending an appearance in Sarnia court on July 6 at 9:30 a.m.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue said the cause of the fire is being ruled undetermined. Damage is estimated at around $30,000.
