Sarnia police issue warning about Nexus-related scam

A new scam is circulating that people who have Nexus cards should be aware of.

Sarnia police said they received a report recently about an individual who was victimized while trying to reapply for a card.

Police said the person accessed the site, believing it was authentic, entered his personal information and paid $140 through Paypal once his application was complete.

It wasn't until later that he realized Paypal isn't used by the Nexus system. The victim contacted his credit card company, TransUnion and Equifax to flag his credit card.

Sarnia police are reminding individuals to pay attention to the websites they access and ensure proper addresses are used.

Constable John Sottosanti said scammers will create websites to mimic real ones to lure people in. He also warns people not to click on surrounding advertisements, because they may forward you to more scams.

Cst. Sottosanti said once information is shared, or money is forwarded to fake websites, it's very difficult, or impossible, to get it back.
