UPDATE: Man charged at Sarnia protest plans to fight the fines

One person was fined in a lockdown protest Saturday in downtown Sarnia.

City police responded to city hall at about 2:30 p.m.

Police said officers arrived to find a gathering of about 60 to 70 people with no one wearing a mask or face covering. The crowd was told it was violating pandemic restrictions and was asked to disperse. Protesters told police they were leaving at 3 p.m. but half of the group refused to leave at that time and some allegedly became confrontational with officers.

Police said a man in his 30's, who became defiant and repeatedly refused to identify himself or leave, was arrested under the Reopening Act of Ontario and the Trespass to Property Act.

He was taken to Sarnia Police Headquarters, fined over $900, and released once he identified himself.

The man charged identified himself as Christopher Tower.

He told BlackburnNews.com that he has already filed for a court date to fight both tickets.

Tower said he was given two warnings to identify himself before he was arrested. He said he didn't want to give police his name because he believed he had not committed a crime, adding that the Reopening Ontario Act doesn't override his Charter rights to protest.

Tower maintains that it was a peaceful protest involving around 50 to 60 people.
