Alleged impaired driver causes power outage after hitting pole

An alleged impaired driver slammed into a hydro pole late Thursday night, knocking out power for several hours.

Sarnia police said a car struck a utility pole in the 100 block of Essex Street near Mitton Street at about 11:15 p.m.

Police said a witness described the female driver who allegedly walked away from the collision, and officers found her a short distance away.

The 35-year-old Sarnia woman was arrested and breath samples taken at police headquarters indicated she was over the legal limit.

She's charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol limit over 80 milligrams. Police said her licence will also be suspended for 90 days.

The crash knocked out power to about 33 Bluewater Power customers in the area.

The utility had repairs completed and power restored shortly after 6 a.m. Friday.
